Recovering from Knee Surgery

Recovering from surgery is not always easy.

Initial recovery:

The first phase occurs immediately after surgery and can last 3 to 5 days in the hospital. During this period, it is essential to:

Rest in bed initially.
- Follow the instructions for administering analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs as directed by a doctor.

Cold compression systems are extremely useful in the first 2 weeks post-surgery ( Grizo.pt )
Practice the exercises taught to improve mobility.
- Undergo nutritional monitoring by a hospital nutritionist.

Transition Phase:

After hospital discharge, recovery continues at home. Here are the necessary precautions during the first week:

Continue physiotherapy.
- Use crutches or walkers, as directed by the physical therapist.
Maintaining a balanced diet focused on protein, fiber, and nutrients to promote healing.
- Ensure adequate hydration.
Avoid inflammatory foods, such as refined sugar and saturated fats.

Intermediate Phase (Weeks 2 to 6):

This phase takes place during the 2nd to 6th week. It is important to work on improving mobility and muscle strength. This involves:

Continue physiotherapy to strengthen the muscles around the knee.
- Gradually introduce resistance exercises.
Maintaining a diet rich in protein will support muscle recovery.
Include fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your diet.
- Control your weight to reduce pressure on your knee.

Advanced Recovery Phase:

After 6 weeks, the focus is on the complete restoration of function.

- Participate in intensive physiotherapy to improve mobility and stability.
- Perform specific exercises for the knee, such as controlled flexion and extension.
Continue with a balanced diet to maintain energy and recovery.
- Schedule regular nutritional consultations to monitor progress.

Long-Term Recovery:

Recovery continues during the months and years following surgery. Maintaining knee health and preventing complications is essential. This requires:

Maintain an active lifestyle with regular exercise.
- Maintain a diet rich in antioxidants and essential nutrients.
- Control your weight to avoid putting excessive pressure on the joint.
- Undergo regular medical checkups to monitor overall health.

Follow the instructions and recommendations of your knee surgeon and healthcare team during the recovery process.
