LCA - Ligamento Cruzado Anterior

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is one of the most common knee injuries.
An anterior cruciate ligament rupture is usually accompanied by knee pain (gonalgia), may or may not be accompanied by joint effusion (swelling), and sometimes a "pop" sound can be heard at the time of injury.
Returning to sports can be hindered by episodes of instability, pain, and joint effusion in the knee. Each episode of instability can lead to the worsening or appearance of new injuries, particularly in the menisci and/or cartilage.
The medical history and physical examination may be sufficient for your orthopedic surgeon to establish the diagnosis. However, X-rays and MRI scans are essential to complement and support the treatment decision.
Treatment varies according to factors such as the degree of activity, the type of Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury or associated injuries (meniscus, cartilage or other ligaments). Surgical treatment involves repair or reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament. ACL Reconstruction is the procedure involving graft type, fixation method, graft configuration, graft positioning, need for lateral tenodesis, and type of recovery among others.
