Meniscus: Do I need surgery?

Meniscus injuries are part of our sporting and cultural lexicon. The menisci protect and stabilize the knee joint in the same way that a shock absorber protects a car wheel.
Within surgical treatment there are several options:
Meniscectomy: removal of the damaged and unstable meniscus fragment;
Meniscus repair: suturing the meniscus tear.

Meniscal suture: attempt to preserve the injured meniscus;
Example of a sutured meniscal ramp tear:
Meniscal transplant: complete replacement of the meniscus;

In certain circumstances, although rare, the knee is locked due to the tear, requiring urgent surgery to resolve the blockage.
