Interpreting the Score

The total score ranges from 0 to 100 points. Higher scores indicate better knee function.

95–100 Excellent
84–94 Good
65–83 Fair
0–64 Poor

What is the Lysholm Score for?

It is one of the most widely used scales worldwide for assessing the knee after ligament or meniscal injury or surgery. Used in:

  • Postoperative ACL follow-up
  • Assessment after meniscal repair
  • Monitoring of chondropathy
  • Clinical studies and orthopaedic research
  • Guiding progression in rehabilitation

⚠ Clinical Note

This score is a monitoring tool — it does not replace assessment by a specialist. A low result should prompt an appointment. A high result does not rule out pathology.

Why Measure Surgical Outcomes?

Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are now considered the gold standard for assessing the success of orthopaedic surgery. They make it possible to monitor progression, compare surgical techniques and personalise rehabilitation.

Standardisation

They provide a quantified, reproducible measure of functional status — independent of the observer or the moment of assessment.

Monitoring Progression

They allow the surgeon to identify persistent functional deficits and adjust the rehabilitation plan or reconsider treatment options.

Clinical Research

They are essential tools for comparing surgical techniques, grafts and rehabilitation protocols — including in the studies published by Prof. Sonnery-Cottet's team.

Personalised Treatment

A persistently low Lysholm score after surgery may indicate AMI, arthrofibrosis, graft failure or untreated concomitant pathology.
